Dagrofa has introduced its first self-checkout system (SCO) at MENY Bagsværd in Denmark, powered by Fiftytwo's 52ViKING POS. This initial rollout marks the beginning of a broader implementation across the MENY chain.
We spoke with Steen Johansson, Store Manager at MENY Bagsværd, and Kathrin Veje Pastoft, Product Manager at Dagrofa Digital, to understand the impact of this new solution on customers, staff, the implementation process, and the potential for expanding self-checkout across other stores within Dagrofa.
Meeting customer demand and improving convenience
MENY Bagsværd's new SCO solution aims to offer greater convenience, giving shoppers more control over their checkout experience. Kathrin emphasized:
"Customers now expect self-service options, and we’re committed to meeting this demand across our stores. Offering both traditional and self-checkout options lets us cater to customers who value speed and independence."
– Kathrin Veje Pastoft, Product Manager, Dagrofa Digital
This broader trend has translated into a positive reception from both customers and staff at MENY Bagsværd.
Successful implementation at MENY Bagsværd
The introduction of self-checkout was made easier by having trained staff available to assist customers during the initial phase. Since MENY’s team was already familiar with supporting the Scan & Pay mobile app, which allows customers to use their own devices as part of a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) solution, they adapted quickly. Steen highlighted:
"Our team was already comfortable with supporting our existing Scan & Pay mobile app, which made adapting to self-checkout straightforward."
– Steen Johansson, Store Manager, MENY Bagsværd
He added that customers were excited to try the new system, reflecting a strong demand for flexible and faster checkout options.
Streamlined shopping and optimized staff allocation
The self-checkout system not only shortens wait times but also allows staff to focus on customer service, especially during peak hours. Kathrin noted that initial adjustments, such as configuring random checks, were quickly resolved with Fiftytwo's support.
"Self-checkout lets our staff focus on customer service during busy times, which is especially useful in seasonal stores. This solution allows us to provide better service and reduce queue times."
– Kathrin Veje Pastoft, Product Manager, Dagrofa Digital
With SCO, customers experience a more convenient checkout, which allows staff to focus on customer assistance and store operations.
Key benefits of SCO
Potential for broader implementation across Dagrofa stores
Dagrofa plans to expand self-checkout options to more MENY and SPAR locations. Kathrin noted:
"We see strong potential to expand self-checkout across our store network, particularly in high-traffic or seasonal stores. Self-checkout can ease pressure on staff during busy times, allowing us to serve our customers better."
– Kathrin Veje Pastoft, Product Manager, Dagrofa Digital
Building on these promising results, Dagrofa plans to refine and expand these services to add further convenience for customers and improve operational efficiency.
Aligning with modern retail needs
With SCO now live at MENY Bagsværd, Dagrofa combines efficient self-service with in-store support to better meet customer needs while optimizing operations. Both Steen and Kathrin observed positive initial responses from staff and customers. These early results suggest that self-checkout could support a smoother shopping experience and improve operational efficiency across Dagrofa's stores.
